Case Study: Cultivating a Culture of Feedback at the University of Oklahoma

Overview: A Campus Committed to the Student Experience

The University of Oklahoma (OU) is more than just a campus; it’s an institution renowned for excellence in academics and the unique “Sooner Experience.” With over 30,000 students across a sprawling 3,000-acre campus, OU is also recognized as one of the nation’s top 10 “most wired” campuses, known for its commitment to modern connectivity. Recently, the OU Board prioritized enhancing campus life by sourcing continuous student feedback—ultimately creating a culture where student opinions drive meaningful change.

Challenge: Sourcing Student Feedback on a Large Campus

As the OU Board considered initiatives to enhance campus life, they realized a critical element was missing—student voices. To truly improve the student experience, the Board needed consistent input on everything from dining options to textbook availability. Their goal was to establish an ongoing feedback loop rather than a one-time survey, thereby creating a culture where students could actively shape their campus experience.

Solution: Digital Kiosks Designed for a “Wired” Campus

To achieve this, OU sought interactive, digital feedback kiosks that would engage students and complement the tech-forward campus environment. OU’s Information Technology team initially reviewed several kiosk options but struggled to find a solution that matched the sleek and engaging aesthetic they envisioned. Then, they discovered Armodilo’s Aura tablet kiosk enclosures, which offered a backlit, branded, and interactive design.

“We were immediately impressed by the Aura’s sleek design and branding capabilities,” said Glenn J. Hansen, Ph.D., Data Scientist at OU. “It was the perfect solution for our feedback initiative.”

OU ordered an initial Aura unit to test its functionality and received overwhelmingly positive responses from students. With confidence in the solution, they quickly deployed 20 additional Aura kiosks across campus, establishing them in high-traffic areas to maximize student engagement.

Engaging Students: Campus Feedback Ambassadors Program

To promote the feedback initiative, OU formed the Campus Feedback Ambassadors team—a group of students who encouraged peers to interact with the kiosks. Each week, the ambassadors distributed university-themed swag at the kiosks to motivate students to complete feedback forms, creating an approachable, student-centered atmosphere around the feedback process.

Results: A New Era of Student-Driven Change

The University of Oklahoma’s feedback program has become a resounding success, with 12 Aura kiosks currently active on campus and plans to expand to 20 by summer. Weekly, approximately 1,500 students engage with the kiosks, providing valuable feedback that has already led to several impactful changes.

  • Enhanced Classroom Comfort: Feedback from the kiosks highlighted the need to replace uncomfortable seating in one of OU’s largest classrooms. In response, the university updated the seating, improving the learning environment for hundreds of students.

  • Improved Skateboard Accessibility: Student feedback also brought attention to the poor condition of certain campus walkways, which posed a hazard to skateboarders. As a result, OU has already re-paved several paths, with more improvements planned to enhance safety for all students.

“The kiosks have transformed the culture of our university,” shared Kris Glenn of OU’s Marketing Team. “They’re mobile, sturdy, and students genuinely enjoy using them.”

Future Prospects: Expanding Interactive Solutions Across Campus

OU’s commitment to feedback doesn’t stop here. The university’s technology store has even repurposed the initial Aura kiosk to streamline student check-in for tech services, showing how versatile and valuable the kiosk solution has become.

As the Information Technology and Marketing departments continue to explore new ways to integrate interactive kiosks across campus, OU is furthering its dedication to an inclusive and engaging campus culture. With each new deployment, the university strengthens its ability to listen, respond, and enhance the Sooner Experience, one student opinion at a time.
